It’s been an action-packed morning on Day Four of the 2011 Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race with teams arriving and departing at checkpoints. The clock has been ticking non-stop throughout the night.
By 10.15am, four teams had arrived at PC8, finally completing the challenging 25 kilometre trek from PC6 which took racers over mountains and past stunning waterfalls, lakes and fjords of Chilean Patagonia.
The teams to arrive at PC8 this morning were Roadrunners Adventure (Denmark), Vaucluse Adventure Evasions (France), Ad Natura – Karibu (Croatia), East Winds (Japan) and Perdido en el Turbal (US, UK).
The tough descent from the mountain above PC8 prevented teams from trekking through the night.
“The trek in CP7 to here was very difficult. The col (a canyon between two mountains) was very steep and after going down a bit we decided not to go down at night. We stopped behind the falls and slept. From now, we just go, go, go. Now have no sleep. We will go to the kayak and we will only stop to eat and we are doing well on food. After, when we sleep depends on the trek. It is still a long way to go,” said Thierry Cunibil from Vaucluse Adventure Evasions at PC8.
Meanwhile, GearJunkie.com (US) who had to take a forced break at the PC8 campsite overnight by race organisers took to the water in their kayaks at 6.14am, chasing adidasTERREX/Prunesco. This was a later departure than planned, as team members searched for equipment they had misplaced.
Roadrunner Adventure and Vaucluse Adventure Evasions both spent a little over an hour at the camp before taking off on the 58km paddle down the fjord. Departure times for the remaining teams at PC8 was unknown before publishing this report.
For the teams kayaking, the rainy conditions are unpleasant, but perfect for paddling, with a decent wind blowing the mist and kayaks down the fjord.
Race Director, Stjepan Pavicic predicts these favourable conditions could allow teams to reach PC9 in around 6 hours.
At PC9, race leaders adidasTERREX/Prunesco checked in at 10.18am and were quickly changing from their dry suits to begin the next trekking section, a 191km slog which is expected to take teams four or five days. The team was taken from the water at 10pm last night, for safety reasons.
At PC7, Dancing Pandas arrived at 02.21 in the morning and are now trekking towards PC8. Todo Aventura has also checked into PC7. Further updates on the progress of these teams are expected shortly.
