South Pole: Heavy Equipment

All of the heavy equipment is named. That's Mary Lou, the D8, plowing snow

The view from the station looking out towards the satellite communications, with Mantis crane, palletized cargo, and cable reels in the middle

New York Air National Guard ski-equiped LC-130 Hercules. Such an ugly, ugly plane, with a tail that seems too big for the rest of the plane, and those non-aerodynamic skis and (can't see from this picture) spine antennas. I think they started building these in 1958 or so, and they're still the way of dropping equipment into improvised runways like the South Pole skiway
