Creative practitioners seeking the ultimate inspiration are encouraged to apply for a unique fellowship at the End of the Earth.
The Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship is an opportunity for artists and writers to experience the Antarctic environment first hand and share this with the broader Australian community through their chosen art form.
Director of the Australian Antarctic Division, Dr Nick Gales said artists tend to see Antarctica through a different lens.
“Becoming an Antarctic Arts Fellow gives you unparalleled access to the icy continent, where you will be able to immerse yourself in the Antarctic environment,” Dr Gales said.
“The artists become part of a vibrant station community and participate as expeditioners in the Australian Antarctic Program.”
The 2018/19 Arts Fellow will travel south on Australia’s icebreaker Aurora Australis and spend approximately three months at Mawson research station.
The Australian Network for Art & Technology (ANAT) will provide the successful Arts Fellow with financial support of up to $5,000.
ANAT Director Vicki Sowry said the grant helps artists cover additional expenses incurred as part of the Fellowship.
“The funding can go towards things such as medical screening, domestic air travel and accommodation costs in Hobart before and after their Antarctic expedition,” said Ms Sowry.
“We see great synergy with the unique nature of the Fellowship and our work supporting artists to meaningfully engage with science and technology.”
Previous Arts Fellows include sound artist Philip Samartzis, children’s author Alison Lester, musician Alice Giles and visual artist John Kelly.
Expressions of interest can be submitted online until 28 March 2018. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to submit a more detailed proposal.
